A big shout-out and thank you to all the cosplayers who took the time to talk to us at Animania Melbourne! There was a lot of love for anime on display, and it was great to hear about your passion for the obsess- er, hobby.

We didn’t get quite enough material for a complete segment, though, so we’re planning to combine your interviews with more that we’ll get at Supanova Melbourne, which is on early next month, and do a segment covering cosplayers both anime and otherwise. Watch this space for more about that in the coming weeks!

Yes, this Saturday, March 5, Planet Nerd is coming to Animania Melbourne! Roving reporter Ben McKenzie will be wandering about the the anime fan festival talking to the fans and cosplayers about why they love anime and what drives them to make the perfect costume. Hopefully we’ll see some of you there!

We seem to have transitioned to the new site setup pretty successfully, so any changes from now on should be mostly cosmetic. The videos in the links below are working again; the podcast feed isn’t quite working yet, but we’ll get it sorted.

Planet Nerd is experiencing a few problems as we update the site to the current version of WordPress, and try to recall how we set this thing up four years ago. Will this violent struggle lead to a climactic rebirth? Will the podcast backlog reappear, so you can relive the best moments from the original series – plus the newer snippets we added later? Well, we certainly hope so!

In the meantime, you can check out the Planet Nerd YouTube channel to relive our past glories.

One of your humble Nerdsketeers, Ben McKenzie, is in the running to become iinet’s “Top Geek”! The initial popular vote section is over, but you never know – he could end up in the top 15 for the next phase. You can find out more at the official Top Geek web site.

By the way, if you’re reading this, you might like to know that Ben will be geeking out live on stage monthly this year, with his Dungeons & Dragons inspired show, Dungeon Crawl. Check it out at Shaolin Punk!

Yes, that’s right nerdlings, Planet Nerd is being repeated by Channel 31 Melbourne – again! The nature of PN is irrepressible, and you can watch us at 11 PM on Thursday nights. It’s tricky to tell which episode we’re up to, but you just might catch a repeat of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book launch episode around the time of the opening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince next Wednesday, July 15…

I received a lovely email crumpled ransom note today from a hard working young band nefarious gang of drunken rogues called “Coldplay” “Captain Dan and The Scurvy Crew”, a band who clearly need to start asking for more citrus-based fruits in their rider.

You can check out their unique brand of Pirate-themed hip-hop at CD Baby. Personal favourite: “That’s How We Row”.

Dance. Sing. Smash glasses of ale on each others’ heads. Pillage. Rape if you must. But most of all, buy it.

Greetings Evildoers,

As occasionally happens, I have a show in Fringe. This time it’s an improvised musical show — we create a new band at that the beginning of the show from audience suggestions, and then play a whole gig as that band. The music is rehearsed, but the lyrics are improvised based on our interaction with the audience. It’s a truly unique new form of theater, and we really enjoy playing it.

Each week is a different genre, so you can come along to all 3 if you like! ;-)

For this event we’ve assembled some of the finest improvisors and musicians in Melbourne to play our 3 debut genres: Folk, Jazz and Rock. We’ve got members of folk ensembles, orchestras, music theater shows, rock bands and more to create an improv supergroup that you will blow your mind.

The gigs are on Saturdays at 4:30pm at Trades Hall and run for about an hour:

  • 27th September @ 4:30pm: Folk
  • 4th October @ 4:30pm: Jazz
  • 11th October @ 4:30pm: Rock

Tickets are $15 full price, $12 concession. The theater is gorgeous, with 200 seats encircling the stage complete with Rolling Stones-style walkway. Oh yeah, baby! And of course in the same building there’s the Bella Union Bar for drinks before and after the show.

Tickets are already selling fast, so book today through Melbourne Fringe (03 9660 9666), or online at http://www.melbournefringe.com.au/season/2008/show/174

Thanks for reading, and I hope to catch you all during Fringe.

Dan Walmsley, Planet Nerd host and man-about-town, is engaged in a minor war with Multi-Level Marketing (read: Pyramid Scheme) company ACN (American Communications Network).

Head over to his personal blog to check out the latest.

Long time no communication, Planet Nerdsketeers (I blame YOU!). In case you didn’t see the tidal wave of publicity (what, you live in Zurich? That’s no excuse!) Planet Nerd was nominated for “Best Comedy” in the 2008 Antenna Awards.

The Antennas award excellence in community television, which is why we didn’t win. However! It was an honour to be nominated, and muchos congratulationes must go to The Bazura Project for not only winning Best Comedy, but also several other awards including Best Sound and People Whose Skin I Would Most Like To Wear Like A Jacket And Pants. Those guys r0x0rz.

Hopefully our nomination will result in us be showered with opportunities to remake Planet Nerd into something truly award winning – stay tuned!
